Your Questions Answered Your NARPO Breakdown questions answered

  • Any retired members of the Police Service who are NARPO members can apply for breakdown cover.

    Your family is welcome too. Partners and your wider family including parents, brothers and sisters, children, grandchildren and in-laws are eligible for cover.

    NARPO Breakdown cover is available to UK residents, excluding Jersey and Guernsey.

  • The aim is to attend the scene of a motor breakdown as quickly as possible. There may be times where delays arise due to external factors beyond control i.e. the weather or roadworks. During these times your patience is appreciated.

  • So that they don’t worry, a call will be made to a person of your choice to let them know you’re OK.

  • You’re covered if you run out of fuel. However, you’re not covered if the lack of fuel is due to fuel company disputes.

  • Yes, although you should always carry a spare tyre. If you're towing a caravan or trailer, remember to carry a spare tyre for that as well.

  • Yes. If your car is towing a trailer or caravan, that's covered as long as it’s attached to the car by a standard 50-millimetre (2 inch) towing coupling. Caravans and trailers are restricted to a maximum length of 7 metres.

  • We will cover the following if the insured vehicle cannot be repaired at the scene of the breakdown or at the nearest available repairer by the end of the working day:

    • taking the insured vehicle and you to any one place within the UK that you choose, or
    • if you are more than 50 miles from the home address:
      • vehicle hire up to £250 so that you can complete your journey and return to collect the insured vehicle after repair, or
      • alternative means of public transport up to £150 so that you can complete your journey and return to collect the insured vehicle after repair, or
      • overnight accommodation (on a room only basis) for 1 night, up to £75 per person to a total of £500, near where the insured vehicle is being repaired
  • Cover will be valid from midnight on the day that the breakdown cover is purchased. Break downs within the initial 24 hours of cover commencing will not be covered. This does not apply to policies at renewal

  • Any country which is a member of the European Union, Andorra, Iceland, Norway, Serbia or Switzerland (including Liechtenstein).

  • Providing they are driving with your permission, your car is covered whoever is driving it. The cover only applies to the car named in the schedule.

  • You can pay for your breakdown cover annually by either Direct Debit, debit card or credit card.

  • If you decide that this insurance does not meet your needs, you may cancel it, without giving a reason, by contacting us within 14 days from the purchase of this policy and declare your requirement to cancel.

    Your premium will be returned to you, unless a claim(s) has been made on the policy within the period of insurance.

    The 14-day period applies to new policies and the renewing of existing policies.

  • Please tell us as soon as possible either in writing or by phone, about any change of car, including details of the registration number, registration date, make and model.

  • Our Breakdown Cover is provided by ERS (Syndicate 218 at Lloyd's) which is managed by ERS Syndicate Management Limited.

  • The policyholder is responsible for the cost of any parts or petrol etc. which should be paid to the repairer

  • You’re covered anywhere within mainland England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the Scottish Isles.
