Do you know how much would it cost to replace everything in your home, if you were burgled or there was a fire?
It may surprise you to know that the average UK home has contents worth £45,000, according to the government-backed Money Advice Service.
Most people would struggle to afford to replace everything themselves, which is why contents insurance is a good idea. As time goes by we naturally accumulate more things and many people have no real idea how much their possessions are worth today.
What is covered by contents insurance?
Unlike buildings insurance, your mortgage provider won't insist that you have contents insurance and it's not always compulsory if you rent your home, but it's a good idea in case the unexpected happens.
Contents are all the items you use to furnish your home such as carpets and furniture, as well as all your personal belongings, jewellery and clothing. If you've got expensive individual items such as works of art, you may need to arrange specific cover for these when you buy your policy.
You'll need to think about everything you have in your home and how much it would cost to replace each item as new. Don't forget all the things in your garage, shed and attic or the latest gadgets you might have bought.
