Mortgage Advice

Finding the right mortgage for you

Buying a home or remortgaging is likely to be the biggest financial commitment you'll ever make, so it's important to talk to someone you can trust that fully understands your needs.

  • Our fully qualified mortgage advisers will find the right mortgage for you. We are able to select from thousands of mortgages available in the market and also have access to mortgages not available to the general public.
  • As our advisers are employed directly by Police Mutual and not paid by the mortgage providers, they're focused on finding the best product for you. We'll always have your best interests at heart!
  • They also understand your employment benefits and won't recommend products you don't need.
  • Mortgages can be complicated so our advisers will guide you through the whole process and as we know your time is precious we'll also complete the paperwork for you.
  • We know you're busy so we'll arrange calls at a time to suit you, including evenings and Saturday mornings, and can send you updates by phone, email or text - whatever suits you.
  • As an additional benefit we also provide a conveyancing service which may even save you some money.
  • The fee for new customers is £300, but this will be waived if you become a Police Mutual Group customer during the mortgage process - for example by switching your home insurance to us or protecting your mortgage through life cover recommended by our advisers.
  • There may also be lender and solicitor fees to consider but the mortgage adviser will explain them to you as they will depend on your personal requirements.

Frequently asked questions

If you have a question that is not answered below, or would just like to know more about our Mortgage Advice, give us a call on 0800 652 9103

What type of mortgage can I have?

That will depend on your personal circumstances and one of our mortgage advisers will fully assess your situation. We can arrange for one of our mortgage advisers to speak to you about your options.

What rates do you offer?

We offer mortgages from the whole of the market and an adviser will be able to advise you of the best one for you.  We have a close relationship with the Police service and in many cases we can use our know-how to get you better deals than other mortgage providers.

I’ve got CCJs. I’ve heard that I will pay a higher rate. Is this right?

The rate that you pay depends on your personal circumstances and our advisers will be able to explain this to you.

I’m looking to buy a house – how much deposit will I need?

How much deposit you have can make a difference to the rates and payments so we can arrange for an adviser to discuss this with you.

What fees will I have to pay?

The service is free for existing customers of the Police Mutual Group. The fee payable for non-customers is £300, but this will be waived if you take out any Police Mutual Group product during the process.

Because I have missed mortgage payments, I can’t remortgage can I?

That may not be the case, as we search the whole of the mortgage market, we may be able to help you. One of our mortgage advisers will be able to assess this in more detail.

How long can I have a mortgage for?

Most lenders offer mortgages between 5 and 35 years, but this will depend on what is best for you and our mortgage advisers will help you to make that decision.

How do I make my payments?

Most lenders will insist that the mortgage payments are made by Direct Debit but usually on a day that suits you.

I have a secured loan will this stop me from remortgaging?

Not always, but it will be taken into account by the new lender. Our advisers will discuss this with you.

Will I get credit searched?

The lenders will conduct a credit search on you during their underwriting process; however we will make you aware of this closer to the time.

I’m not on the Voters Roll. Will this stop me from having a mortgage?

No, however some lenders may require a written explanation and proof of residency for the previous 2 years. Your mortgage adviser will let you know if this is the case.

I am already receiving my pension – can this income be used?

Yes it can, the lenders will take this into account. You will need to provide evidence of your income.
